A brief but brilliant period of guidance under John Davie at teacher training college, during the late 1960’s, gave me growing confidence, eventually leading me to take up HND studies much later as a (very) mature student when enjoying the comparative luxury of a studio of my own in Calderdale for a while.  

The dramatic landscape there, punctuated by remnants of old industry, together with the startling discovery of Ted Hughes’ “Remains of Elmet” found me perched by the side of the Halifax road one day with my tubes of gouache, revelling in a rare chance to express myself in a completely uninhibited way while endeavouring to capture the forms and play of light I had spotted one day from my favourite ‘prow’ seat on top of a double decker bus!

A culmination of stored memories were what I saw on that steep hillside before me, crowned as it is by the little village of Sowerby.
