STEVIE COHEN is a Northwest based artist. Her practice , based on drawing, painting tesxt and collage has continued for over 30 years. She is a past University Lecturer in Contemporary Fie Art and has taught and exhibited widely both in the U.K and abroad. Since retiring from university in 2016 she continues her practice and teaches students privately from her home-based studio.
Her work continues a long standing and deeply spiritual enquiry. It concerns the relationship between the measured and immeasurable aspects of life and how one can only be viewed through the lens of the other .
Her ideas , influenced by scientific, mathematical as well as spiritual philosophies have allowed her to formulate her own view of the world, often with humorous connotations. Most titles have a double meaning-Mind 0ut-Now Then- Changing My Mind.
HER STATEMENT
My practice continues the exploration of the relationship between the measured and immeasurable, or we could say the physical and metaphysical aspects of life and existance. One is only visible through the lens of the other.
Elements such a graph paper, wallpaper , numbers and now dots are incorporated to signify the measured, whereas spontaneous and uncontrolled scribbles reflect the immeasurable.
Symbols and signs are strategically employed. An arrow often pointing pointing to the edge of the canvas, questions what s beyond the physical barriers of time and space.
All work is nothing more or less than an exact recording of events. Just like the sound recordist, we can edit things out but we cannot record what has not actually happened. So, the state of mind is of paramount importance while creating work. Through rigorous practice, what begins as descriptive becomes more spontaneous, and focussed play becomes apparent.
