Collection: Sheila Haldane

Sheila’s art often exudes a sense of calm which can belie the intricate nature of its construction.
Sheila grew up in a 'crafty household' where she and her sister tried out many handmade hobbies and was taught how to sew and mend by her dressmaker mum. It was only later in life that she began to explore different ways of manipulating fabric and applying stitch to achieve artistic outcomes.
The main source of materials for Sheila’s textile art is the bag-fulls of waste from her sewing projects plus gifted remnants. She has developed a style of application to her work that embraces the constraints of this scrap material to create layered textures.
Sheila prefers to use hand stitching to add features and impose cohesion to her images. She feels that it imitates the irregularities found in the natural world and enjoys the sense of connection as a piece takes shape.
Sheila’s work is mostly circular, offering a snapshot view, as with “Winter Sun with Bothy” and “Blue”, or a literal translation such as with her Agate series and “Jupiter “.
Pieces offered for sale at the Gallery include both original pieces and limited addition prints.
