Collection: Paul Spilsbury
Altrincham born and self-taught, Paul has been painting, on and off, for 20 years or so. Recently retired, he now has the time to indulge in his favourite pastime. He specialises in watercolours and he paints in the traditional style, his favourite subjects being local landmarks and city-scapes, predominantly iconic buildings and scenes in Manchester city centre.
His paintings celebrate the juxtaposition of old Victorian and new modern buildings, combining elegant architecture with the gritty realism of modern life.
Above all else, Paul strives to prompt the viewer to recognise the places and scenes he depicts, to make a connection with which the viewer is familiar and has experienced. He believes the success of any painting relies upon the emotion it evokes in the viewer.
Paul has lived in Manchester for 20 years and has held watercolour courses for beginners at local community centres which were well received and great fun. He paints prolifically when he is not walking his beloved dog.
