Collection: Lydia Mansell
Based in Northwich, Cheshire, Lydia Mansell is an emerging contemporary artist working primarily with acrylic and oil pastel. Through bold, expressive colour, rich texture, and layered mark-making, she creates intuitive abstract paintings that explore emotion, memory, and the natural world.
Although largely self-taught as a practising artist, she studied Art and Design before completing a degree in Interior Design. This background continues to inform her understanding of composition, balance, and spatial harmony, while her creative process remains instinctive and led by emotion rather than rigid planning.
Growing up in the Cheshire countryside, overlooking the river and surrounded by the wildflower-filled garden lovingly cultivated by her parents, she developed a lasting connection to nature. These early experiences continue to shape her practice, inspiring paintings that evoke the atmosphere, movement, and emotional resonance of the landscape rather than representing it literally.
Art has been a constant throughout her life, providing a means of expression and reflection. She approaches each canvas intuitively, allowing colour, texture, and gesture to guide the direction of the work. Through softness, movement, and raw surface detail, her paintings explore moments of vulnerability, quiet resilience, and emotional connection. Rather than presenting fixed narratives, her work invites viewers to pause, interpret, and discover their own meaning within each layer.
Her work was recently selected for exhibition at the Tarpey Gallery Open Call in Castle Donington, marking an exciting milestone in the development of her artistic practice.
