Collection: Andrew Alan Matthews

Andrew Alan Matthews is a Mancunian artist producing Cityscapes and you tube stories of Manchester, Salford and beyond

Raised in Moss Side, Andrew’s deeply personal work captures the soul of Greater Manchester through expressive cityscapes, evocative street scenes, and vivid portraits of urban life.

Steeped in a sense of place, his art channels themes of nostalgia, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit of community.

A graduate of Manchester Metropolitan University (Textile Design, 1999), Andrew spent decades in the textile design industry before fully committing to his fine art practice.

He held his first solo exhibition at Salford Museum and Art Gallery (2023–2024), where he also made history as their inaugural solo artist-in-residence.

Now the resident artist at Stanley Square, Sale, Andrew’s distinctive style blends the expressive energy of L.S. Lowry with bold palette knife work, layered brushstrokes, and detailed ink lines.

His subjects range from iconic Manchester skylines and Moss Side memories to portraiture, storytelling, and illustrated children’s books.

Driven by a belief in creativity as a tool for transformation, Andrew says, “My work is about turning life’s stresses into something positive — it’s about finding beauty in imperfection and celebrating who we are, where we’re from.”

This compelling new collection at Goose Green Art Gallery invites viewers to reconnect with the past while celebrating the power and poetry of everyday life in Manchester and Salford.
